Five Fighters Take on State's Best Boxers

FIVE fighters from the Rocky PCYC boxing club, led by coach Des Upton, will contest the Queensland Boxing Championships at the Beaconsfield State High School in Mackay tomorrow and Saturday nights.

Super heavyweight Sam Walker will lead the contingent of Brandon Hughes and Greg Toby in the 60 kilogram class, Billy Evans in the 54kg division and Arlie Beach-based boxer Dan McCormack in the 71kg division.

Coach Upton has been attending the Qld boxing titles since 1991 and believes there will be between 60 and 80 of the state's best boxers weighing in for the tournament in Mackay. He is quietly confident his small contingent will do well.

"Sam Walker will win it and Greg Toby could do real well too. I don't want to say all five will win a state title, because sure enough when I do we only come away with one or two winners."

This will be Hughes's second state titles.

Last year he suffered an asthma attack in the last round of his first bout and had to withdraw, but the left hander, who boxes orthodox (right-hand lead), believes he is better for the experience. …
