NORTH Shields men's first XI began their second season in North League Division Two with a hard-fought 3-1 victory at Brigg.

The hosts began on the front foot yet struggled to trouble Butcher in the Shields' goal, several attacks petering out or being broken up by strong defensive work.

Shields' midfield grew into the game and Harrison was unlucky not to open the scoring after good work down the right from Bell.

The visitors were not to be denied, however, Bell finding birthday boy Brunton with a deft pass into the circle and a deflection taking his shot beyond the goalkeeper. Shields started the second half the stronger team and pressed for a second goal.

However, tempers began to fray and Bell received a twominute spell on the side-lines. The numeric advantage spurred on Brigg but Piper made a brilliant goal-line clearance to preserve the lead.

Back on the pitch, Bell more than made up for lost time and, having danced past three defenders, played a delightful ball for Harrison to convert from close range. …
