It's Now or Never - Let's Get Shaky to Graceland

HE'S the unofficial "king" of Redcar - and now "Shaky" Paul Williams has been left all shook up by the response to an appeal to get him to Graceland.

One of Redcar's most recognisable figures, Shaky is always quick to flash a smile or do an impression of his favourite rock n' rollers, Shakin' Stevens or "The King" himself, Elvis Presley.

Sadly, Shaky, 58, has recently been diagnosed with incurable small cell lung cancer and may have only a year to live.

With time of the essence, an appeal has now been set up to get him to Elvis's home, Graceland. And appeal coorganiser Frankie Wales has been left delighted how quickly it has taken off, with more than PS3,000 pledged in less than a week.

So it's now or never - and it looks like Shaky's dream will soon be coming true.

And even though he's begun chemotherapy, he's still fit enough to perform a bit of rock 'n'roll for his fans!

Warrenby born and bred and a Redcar lad all his life, Shaky, who has learning difficulties, attended Kirkleatham School and has had several small jobs since. He has three brothers - Martin, 55, Ian, 53, and John, 59, and two sisters - Angela, 50, and Linda, 46, who is currently being treated for breast cancer.

He lives on the town's Lakes Estate - and rock n' roll runs through his veins.

Martin said: "Ask him a question about Elvis and chances are he'll know the answer - he's amazing. He knows every record, every foot movement...

"It was Shakin' Stevens he loved first, which is where he got his nickname from, but then he found Elvis."

Frankie said: "The brilliant thing about Shaky is that whenever you see him, he always has a smile for you.

"It's a community thing. A few of the lads were talking about it, we came up with the idea to get him to Graceland and we've got it going straight away, because time is important. …
