SANDS Woodturning's Joseph Hutchinson started out making his pieces as a hobby. Now he's making visitors to the Caloundra Street Fair gasp at their beauty.

Joseph said he started experimenting with woodturning different shapes, but mainly small vases.

"I always wanted to make larger vases that could be used to hold flowers," he said. "I like hardwoods as the grain is very distinct and Australian hardwoods such as gum-trees are an Australian treasure.

"I work mainly with Spotted Gum, Bloodwood and Grey Gum, but have turned other hardwoods like iron bark and tallow wood although these hardwoods can be difficult to season so I had to develop a process to season the timber."

Once Joseph was making larger vases and seasoning them, he had the idea to waterproof the inside because it was always his goal for the vases to be functional.

"I spent a lot of time and effort to come up with a process to waterproof the inside and came up with the idea of using the same material used to waterproof boats.

"I appreciated that flowers and timber work together like no other vase I had seen because the natural grain of the timber and the colourful flowers are striking.

"Given that my vases are unique in that they are 100% handmade from local Australian gum trees and can be used to display real flowers; I realised I had the potential of building a business.

"The response to my work has been very encouraging, especially given I have had many woodturners -- both hobbyist and professionals -- compliment the standard of my work.

"I have worked hard to set my work apart by hollowing the inside properly and I have had many friends check my new work each week looking for a special piece for their home.

"There is an intuitive rule or balance which I try to get right while I am working on each piece," he said. …
