Wanderers Win; the Minor Premiership Turns Red

FOOTBALL: Mackay Wanderers Football Club completed a miraculous turnaround this season.

The men in red finished sixth last season, and on Saturday the club was officially crowned minor premiers, after finishing top of the league.

Wanderers beat rivals Lions, 6-4, in a high-scoring game.

Coach Dan Healy said the minor premiership was reward for everyone's commitment to the club.

This is Healy's first season in charge of Wanderers and it has been a good one -- the team has only lost game one all season.

In the other matches Crusaders won their final regular season game against City Brothers, 3-1.

Mick Searle stood in as coach for the game and said although it was not a great football display, the result was good. "The big thing was a lot of those players were ones playing up from our under-18 team," he said.

"A couple of those blokes played two games in fairly difficult warm conditions, so they did a pretty good job. …
