IT WAS no surprise to read in the paper that Maryborough has one of the highest animal cruelty rates in Queensland as people do not see an animal as having the same basic needs as a human being and a lot of the abuse can be attributed to pure ignorance.

People buy a dog and then keep it confined to a small back yard which it never leaves.

At best, the animal can see the outside world - at worst, it is imprisoned by high walls or constantly tied up so that the owner doesn't have to open and close the gate when they leave the premises.

I see people walking to the shops or walking their baby or children to school and their dog is left at home continually barking out of sheer boredom.

An animal will go stir crazy when imprisoned in just the same way as a human will. I have taken pity on the forlorn faces of local dogs in the past and offered to walk them only to be refused with the reasoning that if the dog got a taste of freedom - it would try to escape! …
