Proud Moment for Teen Flag Bearer as He Helps to Lead Scottish Team Out

HE was born to Scottish parents, in England, lives on Tyneside and supports Scotland.

And on Saturday 14-year-old Adam Downie, who speaks with a Scottish accent to add to the confusion, got to carry the flag of St Andrew while leading Scotland out at St James' Park for their Rugby World Cup clash with Samoa.

Adam, who lives at Monkseaton, entered a competition organised by airline Emirates, a tournament sponsor, to find flagbearers for World Cup matches.

In each of the World Cup's 12 host cities, people were invited to pose for a picture beneath a flag and submit their photo to Emirates for a draw.

Adam, who plays rugby for Rockcliffe under 15s in Whitley Bay, went along to the Newcastle event at Grey's Monument.

The teenager, a student at Whitley Bay High School, was over the moon to be chosen as the city's winner.

He and the 11 other winners were invited to attend a flagbearing "training" session at Twickenham with England star Ben Foden. …
