SOMETIMES it is not about how you start but it is definitely about how you finish.

Esh Group Eagles Newcastle completed an excellent weekend's work on the road with a tough 99-93 win against a spirited Plymouth side last night.

The Eagles now move to a 6-0 start and maintain their unbeaten 100% record.

Head coach Fab Flournoy said: "This was a character game where we had to show lots of determination and commitment to pull out a great win.

"We knew going in this was always going to be a tough assignment but the guys we have always dig deep and are never out of the game."

Newcastle were brilliantly led by captain Charles Smith, whose 33 points were the game high and helped lead his side to victory.

His main support came from mercurial point guard Rahmon Fletcher and Andrew Thomson - but again this was an all-round team performance which pushed the Eagles over the line.

The first quarter saw a Plymouth side full of energy and with a point to prove hit Eagles hard.

The visitors struggled with their defence and with Daryl Corlleto from the outside and B J Anthony on the inside causing constant trouble.

The home side led 29-23 after the first quarter.

However, Newcastle hit back and took the second quarter by a similar margin to end the half all square at 49 points each.

Flournoy added: "At the half we had to remind the players it is about our defence which makes us different.

"We were pretty much getting any shot we needed on offence but it was defensively where we needed to change things."

It was that defence which made the difference as the Eagles gradually got on top it the third period.

By the end of that 10-minute spell, with Smith in fantastic form, the Eagles led 74-68 with one quarter to play.

The final 10 minutes saw Newcastle pretty much in control as they opened the biggest gap of the game, taking a nine-point lead deep in the final period. …
