Allardyce Should Go for Nolan, Says Don; Nolan the Right Fit for Sam's Strugglers

SAM Allardyce has been urged to make Kevin Nolan his first signing as Sunderland manager - with the Black Cats boss understood to be keen on the former Newcastle United midfielder.

Nolan is a free agent after being released in the summer and Allardyce has a space in his Premier League squad that could be occupied by the ex-West Ham man, although the move would be laced with controversy given his background.

Allardyce started work on Wearside yesterday and is due to be presented at a press conference at 2pm today. He has indicated that his first priority is to tighten up Sunderland's slack defence, but he has room to manoeuvre in the free agent market.

Writing in his Journal column, Don Hutchison says Nolan's Newcastle links won't matter if a deal is offered. He thinks that Nolan - who lives close to him in Essex - would be a great fit and Newcastle fans may just have to accept that the player can't turn down a good opportunity.

"I think Sam is inheriting a team in Sunderland who are probably not equipped to play the way he wants at the moment, so the job is to get through until January and have another look then," Hutchison writes.

"Kevin Nolan lives not far away from me in Essex and I'd heard from a pretty reliable source that he might be going to Sunderland, which is a move that I think would be a good one from Sam and for the Black Cats.
