ROSS BARKLEY has to be one of the first names on England's teamsheet now. It will be a shame if he doesn't go on to play regularly at the very highest level.

Barkley (below) was excellent against Estonia and Lithuania and it was clear his decision making has got better. That often happens when a player gets older.

I remember going to Everton about five years ago and the coaching staff told me they had this kid who was unbelievable. Barkley was only about 16 and they said he was the nearest thing they had seen to Wayne Rooney. I followed him from then on because they were so sure about him and they were right.

I never tried to sign him because Everton wouldn't sell him in a million years. They knew he was going to be a top player and their chairman Bill Kenwright would never have considered it. …
