School Set to Become Academy

AFAILING North East school looks set to become an academy, with a potential sponsor having been lined up.

Haydon Bridge High School was placed in special measures having been deemed inadequate by Ofsted following a visit last year.

Now, it has emerged it is on the brink of becoming an academy.

The potential change has been backed by a local MP, who said the would-be sponsor gives the school "the best chance of a strong future".

Meanwhile, the council has said it has been told the school will defi-nitely become an academy.

The school was visited by inspectors in December and was found to be inadequate in leadership and management, behaviour and safety of pupils, quality of teaching, and achievement of pupils.

Ofsted also found its sixth form provision "requires improvement".

Northumberland County Council appointed an Interim Executive Board (IEB) to replace the school's governing body.

It has now emerged that Bright Tribe, a trust which runs a number of academies, including one at Whitehaven in Cumbria, is being lined up as a potential academy sponsor, having been proposed by the Department of Education (DfE.) The trust made a presentation to the IEB last month, following which the board passed a resolution to allow Bright Tribe to move to the second stage of the process.

A consultation meeting with parents, staff and pupils, and Bright Tribe, took place on Monday.

The DfE will ultimately decide whether the school becomes an academy and who the sponsor should be.

Should the DfE decide the school should become an academy, it will leave local authority control and the IEB will be disbanded.

The transfer process would, it is expected, take four to six months.

Hexham MP Guy Opperman has welcomed the potential switch. …
