AS LEAD director for the trust's new electronic patient system, I'm asking patients and families to bear with us while we make the biggest change in our records system we have made in the history of the trust.

We were delighted to be successful in bidding for PS7m to replace our outdated system and for the past two years the project has been in the planning and design stage.

Our staff have been receiving training for the major change which is set to revolutionise the way they work, making information previously held in paper form available on screen.

From this week, patient letters and test results will be available electronically in one place allowing easy access for clinical staff who look after patients.

This major change is absolutely essential.

Our old patient administration system is near the end of its useful life and desperately needed to be replaced.

We still have thousands of paper records and getting these quickly when a patient comes in either for an outpatient appointment or as an emergency is very labour intensive. …
