World Class Lewandowski Is Poles Apart from the Rest

WHAT, exactly, is a "world-class player"? If the expression recently used by Sir Alex Ferguson means anything, it defines a player who at any given time, and in the eye of the judicious beholder, would get into a world XI.

Sir Alex contended that, in all his years at Manchester United, he handled only four world-class players. They were Cristiano Ronaldo (no argument), Ryan Giggs (yes, at various times), Eric Cantona (contentious) and Paul Scholes, whose nomination seemed little more than an attempt by the mischievous Scot to rile Roy Keane.

Sir Alex appeared to have forgotten Gerard Pique, who would have got in most world XIs over the past few years for his achievements with Barcelona and Spain, and I expect it will be the same if Paul Pogba confirms his standing with Juventus in the Champions League and/or France at Euro 2016.

But Sir Alex let Pique and Pogba leave Old Trafford on frees, so they don't count. There would be no question, if we were to pick a world XI right now, about the No9 shirt. …
