Late Agony as Wasteful Boro Are Made to Pay; CARDIFF CITY 1 MIDDLESBROUGH 0

BORO were punished for failing to make their chances count with a killer late goal at Cardiff. The Teessiders dominated for long spells and had some great chances, and Grant Leadbitter even had one cleared off the line late on.

But Boro were crushed as Cardiff scrambled home a scruffy winner three minutes from time.

The goal came as former Newcastle man Sammy Ameobi brought a save from Dimi Konstantopoulos, but the rebound sparked a scramble and when a shot was stabbed in it deflected home off defender George Friend.

It sent Boro slithering down to sixth spot after a run of three goalless games that thas brought just one point.

There was a scrappy start as the sides sized each other up then the first chance feel to Cardiff on seven minutes as Whittingham cut out a stray pass, carried forward and rifled in a low drive that Konstantopoulos got down well to parry then smother.

Boro responded almost immediately with a crisp move that craved to the edge of the box then first Diego Fabbrini's shot was charged down then Adam Clayton sent the rebound sizzling over.

Cardiff went close again on 12 minutes as a slotted pass found Noone on the right hand corner of the box and sent a curling shot that sent Konstantopoulos full length to push it away.

Boro won a free-kick 30 yards out on 18 minutes for a foul on Fabbrini, and although Leadbitter's delivery poor it somehow skidded through the crowd box and just wide of the far post.

Straight down the other end Cardiff threatened as Whittingham pushed on for Connelly to try a 20-yard snapshot straight down the middle, but Konstantopoulos held it easily.

Then Whittingham flashed a freekick from wide on the left across the face of goal but no one could connect.

Boro almost forced the opener on 25 minutes as Tomas Kalas cut a ball bank from the right and Clayton curled a cross into a posse of red shirts for Albert Adomah to bring a good save from a downward header.

Then in a flurry in the Cardiff box a Nugent shot came back off teammate Fabbrini and Downing scooped the rebound high over.

And on 32 minutes a long cross-field ball from Leadbitter sailed to the far side of the box and when Nugent nodded it down Adomah's shot on the turn squirted high over the bar. …
