OH the weather outside is... changeable? When I was at school, the autumn half term was always my favourite holiday.

It's the time of year for scavenger hunts and my sisters and I would go out looking for fallen leaves, spinning jennies, conkers, beech nuts and acorns.

We'd play games and make displays of wild art with our findings.

The hedgerows would get a visit, too, with the last of the autumn brambles, elderberries and windfall apples collected for crumbles and jams.

Our wildlife is also taking advantage of this time of plenty.

Here on the reserve at Saltholme we're seeing our small mammals really taking advantage.

Hedgehogs in particular have been seen, especially around the feeding stations.

The harvest mice are being true to their name and making the most of the seeding plants that are all over the reserve.

We are also in the midst of the autumn migration.

After saying goodbye to the last of our summer visitors a few weeks ago, we are welcoming those birds that will be spending the winter months with us - pink-footed geese forming big noisy skeins in the sky, greylag geese grazing in the fields, and wigeon on the lake edges. …
