IDON'T drink. I haven't drank for close to a decade. It's not something I even think about any more in terms of dating.

I put it out there when I'm asked out because it's hard to tell how much someone drinks unless you've spent a lot of time with them.

Back when I was drinking, dating a non-drinker would have been of no interest to me at all. If that's the case with a bloke it's definitely best to let him know straight off so he isn't wasting his time.

When it comes to drinking, I've found the best type of bloke to date for me is one who is just indifferent to drinking.

Heavy drinkers I have nothing in common with because drinking is their main hobby. Teetotallers can be annoying if they are smug about it, (it's a lemonade, flower, you didn't invent the wheel).

Or even worse, have an air of martyrdom surrounding them (nothing less hot than a bloke dressed up like a monk self flagellating with a Cat o' nine tails as you both sit in a bar. Unless that's your sort of thing. Obviously.) So it's usually best if I hang out with a lad first. Check we get on.

Go for a coffee and a chat a few times before proper dating commences. And I did that with a bloke who appeared recently.

He's a genuinely lovely lad. He's funny and smart and I enjoy his company. When we go for a coffee he's great.

But he honestly doesn't seem to understand the concept of not drinking.

We went for dinner and he orders a bottle of wine for us. Then he pours us both a glass.

Me: No that's OK, I don't drink. Did I not mention that (15 times? In the last hour?) Him: it's not alcohol. It's wine. It's grapes.

Me: Yes. Fermented grapes. Him: Grapes are good for you! I offer to go get a bunch of grapes and eat them if he is concerned for my nutritional wellbeing. He declines. I eat my meal whilst the over priced bottle of wine stares at me, accusingly and unfinished.

Am I making this too complicated for him? I do like him. So I go out with him again and we go to a beautiful bar. I like beautiful bars. I like getting dressed up and sitting in them. It's a stark contrast to the dives I used to knock about in when I did drink. …
