Cup Offers Gateshead a Timely Distraction

SEPARATELY, Gateshead and Nathan Buddle reached the third round of the FA Cup last season.

Together, he hopes they can go one better.

While the Tynesiders last term were eliminated from the competition at West Bromwich Albion, Buddle was part of the Blyth Spartans side that lost at the same stage to Birmingham City.

A move to Carlisle United followed, then to the International Stadium.

And though the Heed have endured a tough month of late in the Vanarama National League, Buddle is relishing the opportunity to turn his attention to a "massive competition" when they host National League North strugglers Worcester City in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round.

"It's not exactly a crisis," he said, of a five-game winless league spell.

"We have slipped up a couple of times, I think we're disappointed with a few of our home games - Kidderminster (Harriers), Welling (United), Dover (Athletic) and then obviously at the weekend (against Altrincham).

"They're games that we feel like we should be winning.

"But it's nothing we're too worried about, we know we can put it right.

One or two wins and you're back in the top five.

"So, hopefully, we can get this weekend out of the way, right our league form and get back up there."

The Heed have reduced admission to PS10 for adults, PS5 for concessions, students and 16/17-year-olds, and PS1 for under-16s.

Buddle added: "It's away from the league, and something for us all to just enjoy. The FA Cup's a great competition. Worcester had a great run last year, so it's not going to be an easy game.

"But we've just got to go into it, hopefully enjoy the game and get into the first round.

"It's a massive competition. It's self-motivating. You get out of bed on Saturday morning and you're really looking forward to the game. …
