QUEENSLAND rugby league legend Shane Webcke wants common sense as well as compliance when it comes to workplace safety.

With an increase in paperwork, policies and assessments, Mr Webcke said clear communication up and down the chain was vital.

"You've got to get to the point where people don't feel like they will get in trouble for saying something," he said.

"When that's there... people will expose what needs fixing."

Joining Ergon Energy employees at the Toowoomba depot, Mr Webcke used his role as Queensland's Safety Ambassador to teach leaders how to get the most from their team.

Ergon Energy bosses said their aim as leaders was to "send our team home in the same way they turned up at work".

Mr Webcke said near-misses needed to be taken seriously, believing it was the "little things that are the precursor to the big things".

He said if leaders in the workplace had even a lingering doubt that the reporting policies and protocols were "onerous or making the job difficult", they needed to be reviewed. …
