OWNING a pet can often be quite a substantial responsibility but also a very rewarding one.

In the lead-up to summer and weather that can include fierce storms as we have already seen and rather warm weather, it is important to consider your best friends whether a cat or a dog to always make sure they are safe and comfortable.

Margaret's Dog Coats and Accessories' Margaret Kelly said it was important to remember that dogs and cats that were either without fur or had sparse coats always needed protection from the harsh rays of the summer sun.

"Sometimes it is as simple as doing for our dogs or cats what we would naturally do ourselves when out in the sun, put on a protective coat or hat or when you go out take a rug or mat that your pet can relax in the shade on," she said.

"I have been operating this business for eight years and have seen dogs and cats of all shapes and sizes and it is important for owners to have the right equipment for their animals be it a lead, rug, carry bag, harness, coats, hats or even booties. …
