(Penguin, PS9.99) FIRST of all, I love Emmanuel Carrere. He is very good at writing about people who are unbalanced or crazy. Craziness is his viewfinder. Reading this book, about the Russian writer and activist Eduard Limonov, I kept thinking: is this guy for real? Limonov was raised under Stalin, defected to New York, became a bum, then a butler, married a nymphomaniac, got involved in war and politics and had lots of desperate sex. This is a brilliant study of a man who became a legend in his own head, and more. It's also a huge insight into modern Russia.
