THE chance to finally realise the North East's economic potential or a piece of spin by George Osborne: just what is the Northern Powerhouse? Two weeks ago The Journal held an event to discuss the Northern Powerhouse and the subject was of sufficient interest to the region's business and political community that more than 400 people got up at the crack of drawn and turned up at Wynyard Hall at 7.30am to listen.

Whether they came away with answers is debatable. Our debate ranged over a number of matters - employment, energy, skills, devolution - and showed how wide-ranging the term is.

Perhaps the one thing our event showed is that the Northern Powerhouse means different things to different people. What it will ultimately achieve in terms of developing the region's economy is still very much up for grabs.

But if the term is just spin, then it's pretty good spin. The term "Northern Powerhouse" appears to have struck a chord because this is a region that wants to believe in its own abilities. …
