Gus Gets New Job at AEK

FORMER Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has been con-firmed as the new manager of Greek club AEK Athens.

The Uruguayan was approached by AEK over the weekend and flew into Athens yesterday for talks.

Poyet has now agreed to take the job, and AEK have announced via their offi-cial Twitter account that the 47-year-old would be signing a contract to take charge until the end of the season.

Poyet was sacked by Sunderland in March with the Black Cats sliding towards relegation, before his successor Dick Advocaat steered the club to safety.

But the former Chelsea forward's 17-month spell on Wearside will be better remembered for him leading Sunderland to the Capital One Cup final in February 2014, and their 'miracle escape' that same season.

Poyet had been linked with several managerial jobs in this country since leaving Sunderland, with reports that he had been sounded out by Leeds United over the summer, and more recently there was speculation that he could be in the frame for the vacancy at Aston Villa. …
