BABY sign language speicalist Emma Wood is top of the tots.

Mother-of-two Emma, 42, has just won the 'Best Newie' title at the annual Tiny Talk conference in Northamptonshire.

She is one of five baby signers in the North East, and there are 123 teachers nationwide.

Tiny Talk Emma, from Brunton Park, Gosforth, Newcastle, said: "It blows me away what children can do before they can even speak.

"A baby can tell you what they need without confusion or upset - they can express themselves and get so excited that they can too."

The Tiny Talk sessions are based on a variation of British Sign Language with 150 core signs based on methods often used to teach deaf children.

They aim to teach children how to express themselves through songs and signs - before they can even speak.

Emma said: "By exposing babies to more words and to more speech they can watch your lips and respond by mimicking you.

"We do believe that the signs help with the process of talking to children. …
