James Bond, checks and a less structured look are the themes of the moment as far as racewear for men is concerned.

Debora Thomson, of Klingers Men's and Womenswear at Mooloolaba, said while men heading to Flemington for the Cup might still wear a suit, they could afford to be a little more relaxed at other tracks.

"It's quite a trend now to be wearing a soft, tailored jacket with a soft pant, a chino pant," she said. "It's about mixing it up a little this year."

Ms Thomson said some men still preferred the tradition of a suit, and cobalt-blue suits, similar in colour to that worn by Daniel Craig in the previous James Bond movie Skyfall, were the fashion of the moment.

A fine London check pattern was also popular. She said some suitmakers were selling jackets and pants separately, enabling wearers to mix and match.

"You might want to put a check jacket with plain pants or plain pants with a check jacket," she said. …
