THERE are 1.18 million golfers in Australia with a population of around 23 million, which means 5% of the population are golfers.

With population in the Wide Bay-Burnett region approaching 50,000 people, we should have 2500 people playing golf.

But sadly we don't.

Golf courses are an important community asset providing the community with not only a championship class golf course, but a great facility for social events, with function and conference rooms, as well as, of course, much-needed green space.

We have some of the best golf courses in our immediate region that are really worth having a look at, and provide a perfect family activity.

Golf has always been portrayed as a sport that was out of the reach, financially, for the average person but has quickly become an affordable and value-for-money activity, especially for kids.

At the moment Gympie Golf Club has several junior programs running and do not charge juniors any golf club membership fees until they are ready to obtain a handicap. …
