RENOWNED Middlesbrough boxing coach and character John Dryden is among the awards again.

The long-time Wellington ABC coach and former North Ormesby club trainer was named the Gazette's Unsung Sporting Hero in 2013 for his dedication to amateur boxing.

And the Ormesby 78-year-old picked up another gong last week, receiving a platinum award from the Durham Association of Boys' Clubs for his 40 years' service to the sport.

John still trains boxers at the no-frills Wellington gym in Middlesbrough town centre and has coached numerous champions at all levels, including Guisborough's currently unbeaten professional and 2012 ABA champion Josh Leather.

He was also an England coach at a time when Ricky Hatton, David Haye and Audley Harrison were on the squad with his own former star fighter, John Pearce.

Pearce provided Dryden's coaching highlight at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur when he won the middleweight gold medal.

The two-time ABA champion was one of John's guests as he received his award from Durham Boys' Clubs president Frank Nicholson at a multi-sport presentation night at Ramside Hall in County Durham. …
