Magnificent Seven Progress to Next Round of the Cup; Football

Article excerpt

TEAMS representing the Stockton Sunday League had a terrific time in the County Cup competitions last weekend, with seven of them definitely going through to the next rounds.

One of the notable performances came from Brad Murray, who hit a magnificent six goals in Layfield's 12-2 victory over The Erimus in the North Riding Sunday Challenge Cup.

League action saw three of the five top teams in Division One take advantage of the other sides being cup tied.

This saw Billingham Merlin jump to the top of the league by defeating local rivals, Billingham Kings, as Michael Ainsey scored the only goal of the match.

Elsewhere, Village Park won a 12-goal thriller against Eaglescliffe, with Gavin Robinson, Callum McNally and substitute Dan Hanifin hitting a brace apiece.

There was no shortage of goalmouth action at the foot of the table as a thrilling, competitive, end-to-end game saw Fairfield Sports and Social Club share eight goals with Storytellers.

Storytellers went two goals up - the second a cracking shot from Gavin Cattermole - but a brace from Billy Thomas and a goal from Chris Johnson put Fairfield in front.

Storytellers then turned the game around to go 4-3 up, Cattermole again scoring, only for Mathew Dixon to equalise. Both teams went for the winning goal, but Matty Jones pulled off a fine save to deny Cattermole his hat-trick and ensure the points were deservedly shared.
