Bruce Backs Boro to Be Promotion Rivals

HULL were the best side on the day - but Tigers boss Steve Bruce still expects Boro to among his team's title rivals.

Bruce's side easily saw off Boro's challenge after they took the lead just before the break.

But the cautious coach insists that Aitor Karanka's side will still be up there come may.

"We were the best team on the day," was his assessment of the convincing 3-0 win.

"Although we have been really well off the last few weeks, considering the opposition, it would probably have to be the best performance of season, "Apart from the (David) Nugent chance early on, after that there was only one team who dominated. It was a really terrific performance and typical of how we are playing at the minute.

"We dominated the game for long spells, we passed it well, we worked very, very hard and once we scored that first goal we were well in control and there was only one winner.

"It was a tough battle against a good team and we've come out on top. The lads are all cock-ahoop in there because they know it is a big win for us."

But wily Bruce, who has steered both Birmingham and Hull to promotion from this division, isn't writing Boro off just yet.

"Boro will still be a threat this season," he explained.

"I always said from the start that if we finished above Boro this season then we will have given ourselves an outstanding chance of going up because they are a good team, they are well organised, they have good players and they have a good manager.

"And I still think Middlesbrough are a good side despite the result.

"And whether we played well or they didn't play as well as they could do, you are never sure.

"But today, I think they just came up against a better team, simple as that.

"On the day, we were the better team by a distance, no one would argue with that - but Boro are still a good team "Believe me, they will still be right up there this season. …
