McClaren Challenge to Darlow over Place

STEVE McClaren has thrown down the gauntlet to Karl Darlow - stressing that Rob Elliot is "the man in goal" for Newcastle United at the moment, and will have to have that shirt wrestled away from him.

Republic of Ireland international Elliot put in an outstanding display at Dean Court on Saturday, pulling off five saves as United snatched a 1-0 victory against AFC Bournemouth.

The 29-year-old played despite a thigh strain and after starting the season as third-choice keeper, has found himself in between the sticks due to injuries to Darlow and No 1 Tim Krul.

After back-to-back clean sheets, McClaren admits Darlow has a fight on his hands to get into the team, even though he is nearing a return to fitness.

When asked if Elliot has put forward a case to remain in goal even when Darlow is available for selection, McClaren said: "Absolutely. He's the man in the goal at the moment. We'll wrap him in cotton wool and try to get him out for the next game. …
