Heavy Rain Tests Flood Defences

FLOOD defences were tested on Teesside as water levels rose on the River Tees in Yarm and Stockton.

Flood alerts were issued on Saturday for low-lying land in the lower Tees Valley, from Middleton St George to the Tees Barrage, which includes Lustrum Beck, Greatham Beck and the Riverside footpaths at Yarm.

The flood gates at Yarm were closed on Sunday morning, and water levels rose steadily throughout the day.

Precautionary defences were also put up close to Lustrum Beck on Burnside Grove in Hartburn, Stockton - close to the scene of heavy flooding in 2012.

The River Tees caused flooding at Croft near Darlington, with the A167 almost impassable to traffic, which has been made worse due to a diversion from the A1.

The Environment Agency put the alerts in place after heavy rainfall, which began on Saturday.

This has led to the River Tees rising, with levels peaking yesterday afternoon. …
