THE ST Mary's Primary School senior boys cricket team has come within a whisker of a day out at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Not in the crowd, but actually playing cricket on the MCG.

St Mary's fell just short in the Queensland final of Milo T20 blast, against Kallangur Primary School.

Kallangur heads to Victoria to play the national finals.

But for St Mary's the achievement of having come so far has not lessened.

"It was pretty close until the last couple of balls," St Mary's teacher and cricket team coach Jarrod Boyle said.

"There were lots of tears after the game.

"They are a committed bunch of kids.

"They've trained every lunch time for the last couple of months, so to fall just short was pretty tough."

At Allan Border Field, St Mary's beat Frenchville and Tolga primary schools, before beating The Southport School to reach the final against Kallangur.

That came after they had won both their district and regional competitions. …
