Airlie Awaits Schoolies Boon This Weekend

The Daily Mercury is calling on school leavers to gather for a big group photo to celebrate the end of high school at Harbour Beach this Friday. At 10.30am the Mercury will capture the celebrations for a special poster that will be printed in Saturday's paper. Be there!

THIS weekend Airlie Beach will have a population boost of about 2000 young faces.

Schoolies Week kicks off on Saturday and graduates from Mackay and around Queensland will be heading to the Whitsundays.

Although there has been a state-wide trend of young people turning away from organised schoolies' events, the influx of visitors will still be a tourism boon for the region.

Martinique Whitsunday Resort co-owner Charmaine Coogan expects about 65 bright-eyed school leavers. She sent out a list of schoolies tips to all her new guests.

A beach towel, camera and mum's lasagne were all on her things-to-bring list. …
