DARRYL Smith is as much a part of the landscape at The Bluff at Alexandra Headland as the rocks and the pandanus trees.

Smithy has been surfing at The Bluff near enough to every day for the past 14 years.

He turned 75 yesterday but plans to be hitting the water every day for many more years to come.

Smithy's Bluff habit started for health reasons.

After undergoing a quadruple bypass, he was encouraged to do some sort of regular exercise.

"My doctor said I had to do something to keep fit," he said.

"I said I didn't mind body surfing but I don't like swimming, I don't like running, I don't like jogging. What about surfing?

"The doctor said not sustained exercise.

"I sit out there and paddle backwards and forwards for two or three hours."

Now, the only problems Smithy has are the days when he cannot surf.

"I get very angry when I can't surf, when there's no surf.

"When it's too big I don't go in. I'm too old to be getting my brain bashed. …
