Dance the New Wave; Dylan De Jong Tells How a Mother and Daughter Are Mastering a New Surf Movement

SURFERS know all too well the struggles they went through as beginners trying to master paddling out and catching their first wave.

Have Kristy Quirk tell you to add a dance routine into the mix and you'd probably look at her like she's insane.

She's not kidding, though.

Kristy, 39, has mastered her own style of surfing she calls "surf dancing" and she wants to teach it to the masses.

"The ocean's the stage and the waves are what we're dealing with," she said.

"Jesus walked on water, but we're dancing on water."

SurfDancer started in 2004 and has been opening the eyes and minds of surfers throughout the Sunshine Coast.

"I teach surfing through dance and surf dancing is exploring your full range of body movements," she said.

"Any dance on the board is you expressing your joy of surfing through that medium."

She said her surf lessons incorporated dancing and surprisingly, they actually seemed to help rookies pick up the skill a lot faster.

"I've been teaching surfing to beginners -- people who can't surf and can't dance," she said.

"I get them comfortable on the board and dancing with the board on the beach first.

"Then when it actually comes to standing and riding, they find it much, much easier and it just comes naturally -- mainly because there are no inhibitions in the full range of body movements."

The desire to combine her two passions in life -- surf and dance -- ignited the idea for Kristy's SurfDancer project.

"We are the first people to bring production to the ocean," she said.

Kristy has practically lived on a board her whole life: she started out skating before she found her fins with surfing.

Growing up in Sydney's Palm Beach next door to the surfing legend Nat Young, Kristy has surfed all her life.

Kristy said that even before she became surf-mad, she had always had her feet planted firmly on some sort of board. …
