UP, up and away...or maybe not, for tourists and light aircraft aviators, if Mackay Airport closes its cross runway.

Neil Christensen, who is an aircraft engineer, former pilot and flying instructor, is part of the Mackay General Aviation Action Group who believes the decision to close the smaller runway will cost the tourism industry.

The cross runway is used by smaller aircraft, to land and take off safely under certain conditions and in certain weather is their only option. Mackay Airport will close it, as it believes the poor lighting and runway conditions are too costly to replace.

"We don't need lights...on the cross runway," Mr Christensen said.

"The tower often puts light aircraft on this runway if there's not too much crosswind so there's no congestion on the main runway."Mr Christensen stressed he was not just against expansion.
