Sir Nicholas: I Won't Make Another Movie Unless It's Written by Alan Bennett

NICHOLAS HYTNER's latest project with Alan Bennett, The Lady In The Van, has proved to be a box office hit and he has no plans to change his winning formula.

The director said he will not make another film unless it is written by Bennett.

Sir Nicholas, the former director of the National Theatre, wants to concentrate on his new London Theatre Company, which is set to open in Tower Bridge in 2017.

The Lady In The Van, which stars Dame Maggie Smith, was adapted by Bennett from his own 1999 West End play about the real story of an eccentric woman who stayed in the driveway of his Camden Town home for 15 years. It has made PS3 million at the UK box office in only a week.

Sir Nicholas, 59, outlined his future plans to the Standard at an event for the film in Manhattan hosted by the Peggy Siegal Company. He said: "Directing films is not what I do. I do it when he [Bennett] writes a screenplay but that's it. …
