NEWCASTLE United head coach Steve McClaren was more satisfied that four of his senior players got through 90 minutes unscathed than with the final outcome of this second-string clash against West Brom.

Goalkeeper Karl Darlow and centre-back Jamaal Lascelles also played the full game as they looked to stay in contention for the Magpies.

Darlow had a save to make as early as the first minute when Samir Nabi broke free down the right - but the United 'keeper got down well to push the ball away from danger. From the resultant corner Tahvon Campbell rose high and Darlow watched on as it flashed past the bottom of the post.

With 26 minutes played teenage striker Lewis McNall got free down the left before hitting a low effort at Palmer, who saved with his legs before gathering the ball.

United deployed Yoan Gouffran in a defensive midfield role, and with half-an-hour played the Frenchman almost let West Brom in to score after slipping over in his own penalty area before belting the ball clear with a bemused-looking Darlow watching on.

Newcastle continued their search for the opener when winning a freekick 25 yards from goal. …
