A voice for the region

THE Sunshine Coast Sports Federation congratulates Sunshine Coast Council for its support, chasing national teams to come to our area in the lead-up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

It appears the Scotland squad could be the first cab off the rank, with Mayor Mark Jamieson rolling out the welcome mat in an all-out attempt to secure one of the big nation signings.

The Federation was delighted to play a major part of the initial request for help from the State Government Games Legacy office in Brisbane.

With 17 sports contested at the Games, there is no doubt the Sunshine Coast Council region could adequately accommodate many different athletes in the lead-up.

The University of the Sunshine Coast's sports science unit could be a major influence for any team, club or sport wanting to be based here. Its facilities could be the game changer.

It was a different picture back in 2000, and yes, we had some good venues, but not what we have today and again the university and its state of the art equipment is just what the doctor ordered. …
