Man Admits to Fly-Tipping on Nature Walk

A COUNTY Durham man dumped a van-load of rubbish on a Gateshead nature walk.

Frederick William Cowie, of Sowerby Street, Sacriston, County Durham, left a mountain of household waste, including a bath, bags of rubbish, boxes, cardboard, soil and rubble, on a bridal path near Thomas Street and the Mount Community Centre, at Eighton Banks.

Environmental enforcement officers at Gateshead Council received a call about the rubbish in April and visited the area, which forms part of a nature walk and it is popular spot for walkers and riders.

An examination of the waste led to the home of a Washington woman, who was interviewed.

She confirmed some of the waste was hers but that it came from the rented house she was in the process of moving into.

She understood that, after emptying her boxes, arrangements had been made by the manager of the property for someone to clear it away, along with other waste that had been left by the previous tenant. …
