CRICKET: The recently formed Rainbow Beach cricket team is in third spot on the Gympie B-grade cricket competition ladder, in just its first year competiting.

The club is travelling well too, and having already gained an impressive reputation, its members are now turning their focus on the younger generation and therefore, the future of the club.

To lure younger players, the club is raising funds for their home grounds - adjacent to Rainbow Beach Primary School - to be upgraded.

Before the club gave the pitch a bit of tender loving care at the start of the season, it was just a big patch of dirt and grass, but to attract more players they need more space and better grounds.

Rainbow Beach Cricket Club president and team captain Merv O'Neill said the club would like to see more divisions, especially in the juniors, to be introduced in coming years, perhaps even as early as next season.

The club has started the ball rolling with raffles and has applied for grants to give both the club and the primary school a larger area, to host other sporting events and of course, cricket. …
