Mackenzie's Passion Set to Soar in USA Stint

HOCKEY has been a successful hobby for Toowoomba athlete Mackenzie Andrews, but running is her passion.

Next year that passion will open up a new world for Andrews when she looks to take her running potential to another level on the US athletics' stage.

The 18-year-old former Fairholme College student leaves Australia on January 10 to begin a full three-year scholarship in Ohio.

There she will link with the NCAA Division One College Akron University where she will train and compete full-time in her pet 800 and 1500 metre events.

Her college stint will include other distance racing including the 3000 metres and cross-country.

Andrews is part of Toowoomba's Running High athletics' team under coach Tom Bradbury.

Running High is the former home of champion Toowoomba distance runner Patrick Tiernan.

Twenty-one-year Tiernan is currently on the path of a possible Olympic Games berth while competing in the US on a scholarship with Villanova University. …
