HERE'S some good news for anyone who has ever run along the beach waving frantically at a fighter jet overhead.

They can see you.

Well, they can't if they're travelling at 2000kmh several kilometres above the ground but at 500kmh and less than 100 metres high, they definitely can.

That's exactly how fast and high members of the RAAF No.1 Squadron will be travelling when they pass over the Sunshine Coast in their F/A-18F Super Hornets this afternoon.

And Wing Commander Steve (no surname for security purposes) has revealed that at that "relatively slow" pace they can see everything down below.

And they love it when people wave.

"At that slow speed it's not a bad view at all," he said.

"There is time to fly the aircraft, maintain our formation to make sure we don't get too close to each other and still be able to glance out and take in the Sunshine Coast as we go past.

"At that speed and height we can see families down on the beaches and we can see the little kids waving at us. …
