AN APPEAL has been made to help around 90 students who had to evacuate their homes after a major blaze in Newcastle.

The youngsters were staying at Charlotte House - behind the site of the fire at the Kard Bar on Cross Street.

When the blaze broke out at around 8.45am on Tuesday, the group were asked to evacuate their apartments and were unable to go back in overnight.

The students, who study at International House Newcastle, in Gallowgate, were provided with aid by the Red Cross and some firms also helped with supplies. However, the majority of the students ended up sleeping on the floors of the language school, which is where they may have to stay unless the cordon is lifted. Zoe Woods, the school's marketing co-ordinator, said: "A total of 93 of our students were evacuated after the fire. Some were still in their pyjamas.

"On Tuesday, the Red Cross helped out and we also had supplies from firms like Tesco and Sainsbury's.

But the majority of the students ended up sleeping on the floors of our school. …
