CO2 Neutrality Is Gibson's Poll Plank

GREENS mayoral candidate Tony Gibson will drive a policy of carbon neutrality for the Sunshine Coast region by 2025 and will study the introduction of rapid-charging stations for electric/battery-powered vehicles.

Mr Gibson says carbon neutrality is achievable and is being pursued by Byron Bay Shire Council and is a policy commitment of the Greens' Noosa Council candidate Aaron White.

Mr Gibson said there was already a high level of solar take-up in the region.

He said the carbon neutrality target fitted with the existing council's goal to be Australia's most sustainable region but said it would first require a baseline audit, then the setting of measurable targets.

He is hopeful both Noosa Council and Sunshine Coast Council could then work to achieving the one target.

"This is where the new economy and new jobs will emerge," Mr Gibson said.

To signal his personal commitment he will commit $60,000 annually of his mayoral salary, the equivalent of $240,000 during the next term, to a foundation to drive green initiatives and green jobs. …
