Cliff Fall Man Taken to Hospital after Rescue

ASEVERELY injured man was rescued by lifeboat crews after falling from cliffs in South Shields.

The man, believed to be in his early 20s, fell from cliffs on to the beach at Frenchman's Bay in South Shields at around 2.30am yesterday.

Tynemouth RNLI launched two lifeboats after Northumbria police, who were on the scene, sent for help.

A total of nine volunteer crew members raced to the site along with paramedics and Sunderland Coastguard.

The inshore and all weather lifeboats arrived at Frenchman's Bay just five minutes after launching, with one crew member wading ashore to assist paramedics who were already treating the man.

He had suffered multiple injuries including a number of broken bones but was still conscious.

The all-weather lifeboat stood off a short distance from the beach, illuminating the area with searchlights and parachute flares while the paramedics were at work.

Emergency services decided to evacuate the man from the beach by lifeboat and, once he was able to be moved, he was placed on a stretcher and carried to the inshore lifeboat, then transferred to the much bigger all-weather lifeboat. …
