GYMPIE region councillors agreed on one thing during heated land use debate at their meeting yesterday - they are all democrats.

Planning councillor Ian Petersen and Deputy Mayor Larry Friske clashed with staff and most other councillors in urging variations to the planning scheme for three development projects.

They argued that as elected representatives they did not have to tick boxes or accept staff advice and were obliged to take responsible decisions and judge proposals on their merits.

But Coast councillor Mark McDonald said they had forgotten the important role of public participation in preparing the plan. Variations should be part of a planning scheme review, also with community input, he said.

At issue were two tiny proposals at The Dawn and McIntosh Creek Rd and a bigger one at The Palms.

Councillors rejected all three proposals, but foreshadowed a planning scheme review in the new year.

One was for a small four-bedroom structure to allow the owner's daughters to have independence without leaving home. …
