I hope everyone is set for Christmas.

The countdown is officially on!

It was lovely to take some of the families we have supported this year to see the pantomine at the Tyne Theatre in Newcastle.

The show was amazing - definitely my favourite one to date. A huge thank you to everyone at the theatre for making the show so special for all the children.

For this week's column we spoke to Rachel Kaczmar, whose little boy, Max, we have helped by providing a PS6,689 custom-made bed which has proved life-changing for both him and his parents.

He suffers from a condition called hydrocephalus, which is a build-up of fluid on the brain and causes his head to be abnormally large and vulnerable.

Rachel said: "It's hard to believe that it's only been 18 months since we applied to the Sunshine Fund for a therapeutic bed for Max.

It has become such an integral part of day-to-day life that it's easy to forget the stresses and strains of life before BD Day (bed delivery day)!

"As a new parent, you expect all-night sleeping and lazy lie-ins to become but a distant memory.

"But, for us, the intense sleeplessness we experienced was because we were so anxious that Max was going to seriously injure his head or choke on continual reflux.

"When Max came home at three months old, we had to manage his multiple and often conflicting medical needs the best we could, but over time it became clear that we needed a better solution.

"Although we were hopeful, we were not expecting the Sunshine Fund to fund Max's bed.

"Because of his hydrocephalus we needed a bed with a medical-grade mattress to support his heavy yet fragile head.

"We needed to be able to move the end of the bed up into an incline to help with his gastric problems and for the whole bed platform to move up and down. …
