Four Nurseries Facing Closure

FOUR council-run nurseries are facing closure and two are set to be transferred to schools as part of a review of childcare.

Under the proposals, North Tyneside Council will stop being a provider of childcare by September 2017 and the future of all six nurseries is being considered.

The plan is to close the Wallsend and Shiremoor nurseries by September 2016, and shut the Riverside and Oaktrees nurseries, in North Shields, by September 2017. Elsewhere, Battle Hill Nursery is to be transferred to Battle Hill Primary School and Denbigh Nursery will be transferred to Denbigh Community Primary School by July 2016.

Staff have been informed and are undergoing a consultation process.

The council says it will not make any final decision until March and people have a chance to give their views until January 22.

Letters explaining the reasons have been given to parents and carers.

In them, the authority says: "Childcare in the borough has changed in recent years. Schools are playing an increasing role in delivering nursery care and more and more independent childcare providers are choosing to open in the borough.

"North Tyneside now has a vibrant, diverse and high quality childcare sector, with the majority of childcare providers rated as good or outstanding by Ofsted.

"The strength of the childcare market in the borough and the significant budgetary pressures facing the council means it is the right time to consider the future of all six nurseries currently operated by North Tyneside Council.

"The proposal is that North Tyneside Council will stop being a direct provider of childcare by September 2017. There will however continue to be sufficient childcare services, for everyone who needs it, delivered by other high quality providers within the borough. …
