PROCRASTINATION within Gympie Regional Council has been blamed for continuing inaction on the long-planned Curra shooting range.

Cooloola Range Complex Association president Ron Owen says the organisation has had promises since 1993.

"Councillors all support it but the staff are procrastinating," he said yesterday.

"All we need from the council is a lease proposal to go to the state, so we can have tenure. Then we can start.

"We have 18,000 licensed shooters around here and we need ranges for the future."

Mr Owen said delays affecting the project could no longer be blamed on the State Government.

Successive governments had done their part by approving the project, requiring the council only to prepare an appropriate lease.

And the project had now been at that stage for years.

"(Gympie MP) Tony Perrett went to the council and asked them why it hasn't happened.

"They told him they were waiting for confirmation that the agreement in principle still stood. …
