Newcastle Take Spoils in Gridiron Showdown; Northumbria Come off Second Best in Cup Clash

NORTHUMBRIA University men's American Football firsts were edged out by fierce rivals Newcastle as the 2016 Stan Calvert Cup gathered pace.

The bulk of the cross-city events will take place next year, but cricket points already count towards the final total.

And American Football opted to get their fixture played early in order to avoid any potential clashes later in the season.

A compelling clash ended 14-7 in Newcastle's favour, but Northumbria came very close to winning the game and proud coach Phillip Ireland said: "We managed to get all the way to the second overtime at 7-7. "We were within one yard of winning the game at one point."

The match - played at Druid Park - proved to be a classic Stan Calvert fixture.

And although Northumbria suffered defeat Ireland was pleased with the performance of his players.

"I'm really happy with how the team played - it just didn't happen for us really," he added.

"Newcastle are a very good team and they finished it off at the end.

"There was not a specific turning point in the match. We played our game very well and so did Newcastle but unfortunately they have come up with the win."

A victory would have fired Northumbria above Newcastle in the BUCS Scottish/Northern1A league, but the result leaves them second-bottom.

Elsewhere this week Northumbria defeated the elements - and 16 rivals - to take another invaluable haul of BUCS points in the final week of competition before Christmas.

Strong winds had threatened to ride roughshod over the fixture list with the men's Rugby Union firsts clash just one of the matches to fall victim to the inclement conditions.

However, 27 games did go ahead with one result in particular catching the eye.

A crushing 38-0 victory for men's Rugby League firsts against derby rivals Newcastle secured the Premier League title with a game to spare. …
